South Valley Sabercat, Ryan Cothrun, was recognized by the Gilbert Fire Department and the Air National Guard after he stopped to help an elderly woman with dementia who had wandered miles from home in extreme heat. Ryan was featured in ABC15's Uplifting Arizona. Watch the segment by ABC15's Cameron Polom.

Since the start of the 2025-2026 school year, we’ve been keeping up with Tyler Lopez and his STEM classrooms at South Valley Junior High. See how his experience at SVJHS helped him turn a room of strangers into a community of "great young scientists" who are finishing the year with a high-energy BattleBots competition.

At his final meeting, the GPS Governing Board celebrated Dr. McCord for fostering an open, transparent governance culture between district administration, families, and the community.
“The culture of this district is relationships,” commented Dr. McCord. “We can have goals, we can have strategies, and we can have excellent test scores, and we can have missions, but none of that matters if we don’t have a heart.”
